Rejecting the Sewell report, empowering women and Captain Tom’s challenge. Here’s 5 things that happened in the charity sector this week.

  1. Organisation Charity So White encourage the charity sector to push back on the Sewell Report

Charity So White, an organisation tackling institutional racism in the charity sector, are encouraging White people in the charity sector, to take action against the Sewell Report. In a tweet, Charity so White said: ”POC have been left reeling from the gaslighting and historical revisionism in #SewellReport. Our lived experiences of institutional racism is being denied, and our reality questioned. White people, it's time to use your power and privilege to push back.” The thread highlights actions that White people in charities can take, including signing a petition, organised by the Runnymede Trust to reject the report. Signatures must be added by 23:59pm on the 8th April.

2. Google.org launches $25m impact fund for Women and Girls

Google.org earlier this month launched a $25m in funding and Googler expertise to organisations that are creating pathways to prosperity for women and girls. The fund deadline is Friday 9th April, and ideas can be submitted to help propel women forward, for themselves and communities around them. 3. Good Gym volunteers give community centre a revamp

Good Gym Bristol volunteers made a stop off, as part of their daily exercise, to give the Southville Community Centre in Bristol a spruce up. The community centre is part of BS3 Community Development, which provides support to people in the local area. The volunteers tidied and painted the outside space, to give it a fresh new look as the community centre opens up from Covid restrictions.

4. Individuals from across the UK encouraged to fundraise as part of the Captain Tom 100 campaign

The legacy of Captain Tom lives on in the lead up to what would have been his 101st birthday. Captain Tom raised £38.9m for NHS last year and this year, a charity set up in his memory, The Captain Tom Foundation are encouraging individuals and organisation to take part in the CaptainTom100 challenge, encouraging people to donate to charities or do 100 things in a challenge (e.g. 100 sit ups, tell 100 jokes) to fundraise for local organisations. 5. Croydon Voluntary Action share stories about social prescribing

Croydon Voluntarty Action have shared stories about what social prescribing is and how it’s positively impacting local communities. GPs prescribe via Link Workers, such as James Moore, who is featured in the article. Through people like James, individuals are signposted to join local community groups to help them with their physical health, mental health and reduce isolation.
