Bristol Capital Green Partnership use Makerble to measure the Collective Impact of their Community Climate Action projects

Bristol Green Capital Partnership (BGCP) is a consortium of organisations working together to make Bristol a more sustainable city.

  • In 2020 they launched their pilot programme funded by the Climate Action Fund within The National Lottery Community Fund and used Makerble to track the impact of their pilot.

  • Now they have received £2.5million in continuation funding to expand their programme and are continuing to use Makerble to collect, analyse and visualise their impact.

  • We’re excited for what the future holds for BGCP and for Bristol!

The Challenges

When BGCP first came to us, they had 3 key challenges to overcome from an impact data perspective:

  1. Each organisation within the partnership had its own workstream which overlapped with other partners

  2. BGCP worked with an evaluation consultant, Lori Streich, to create an outcome measurement framework, but they knew that this framework might need to change over time.

This meant they needed a system that gave them the flexibility to add and remove indicators and data collection tools without incurring additional charges or requiring a database specialist.

  3. They wanted to tell their story qualitatively - with pictures, videos and anecdotes - but also quantitatively - with outcome indicators which they could aggregate across different partners and plot using charts that showed improvement-over-time

The Solution

Lori and the team at BGCP chose Makerble as their way to track the difference their programme made. We used our simple onboarding process to get the team launch-ready in just a few weeks:

  • Design stage: BGCP sent us their Surveys and Outcomes Framework. We designed their system so that

    • each partner organisation would be a Makerble Project

    • the lead staff members within each partner organisation would be Makerble Coworkers (Users)

    • each survey would be a Makerble Survey

    • the measures in their Outcomes Framework would become Makerble Outcomes and Indicators

  • Build stage: we created their platform in a few hours, got their feedback and made some changes as and when their survey questions evolved.

  • Embed stage: we trained their partners to use the web and mobile platform in a 1hour training session and provided our standard free customer service whenever people had questions once they began using Makerble day to day.

The Impact

BGCP are using Makerble to:

  • capture anecdotes from the grassroots activity being conducted by each partner

  • capture survey responses which contribute to the outcomes in the evaluation framework

  • report on the impact being achieved by the partnership

  • report on the performance of each individual partner as well as the partnership as a whole

Recent highlights as a result of using Makerble:

  • BGCP were able to demonstrate the impact of their pilot programme. As a result, they have received a further £2.5million in funding from the National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund.

  • BGCP have expanded the range of impact indicators they are using and updated their surveys
